Tropiquaria Zoo is a family-friendly zoo and animal sanctuary in Somerset. Set within a historic 1933 BBC Radio Transmitting Station, Tropiquaria offers a distinctive visitor experience combining wildlife, conservation, education, and heritage.

We partnered with Tropiquaria to design and develop a modern, SEO-optimised website that reflects the full scope of their offering.

By combining strategic content structure and conversion-focused design, we created a platform that not only showcases Tropiquaria’s unique identity but also supports increased traffic and engagement.

“Beyond happy – great experience from start to finish.”

“Excellent service and dedication, communication was good and they understood exactly what we needed and wanted to achieve. They brought new ideas and solutions to the website, and made the whole process straightforward and positive. Highly recommend!”

The Challenge

We redesigned and rebuilt Tropiquaria’s website with several key goals:

  • Clearly communicate their diverse offering (zoo, aquarium, reptile house, experiences, and play areas)
  • Highlight their conservation work and efforts
  • Improve user experience for families planning visits
  • Create a structure that is easy to navigate and scalable
  • Modernise their digital presence while preserving their unique identity

Their previous website did not fully capture the charm of the location or the breadth of what they offer, and key information such as opening times and attractions needed to be more accessible.

Visual Design

We designed a visual identity that balances family-friendly appeal, natural environments, and the site’s historic setting, creating an experience that feels both engaging and authentic.

The design needed to:

  • Reflect the feel of a family-friendly zoo and animal sanctuary
  • Capture the sense of discovery and adventure found throughout the exhibits
  • Support clear navigation and readability across all devices

Development

The website was built to ensure a smooth experience across all devices.

Key development considerations included:

  • Fully responsive layout for mobile, tablet and desktop
  • Optimised performance for fast loading speeds
  • SEO-friendly page structure
  • Clear contact and enquiry pathways
  • Global elements such as ribbons and call to actions
  • Easily purchase tickets and adopt animals using PayPal and Card payments
  • List a large number of the Zoo animals with the ability to adopt each of them

This ensures visitors can easily access the site and Zoo information whether they are browsing from home or on their phone.

Listing Animals

We used custom WordPress post types to list all of the zoo animals and custom fields to set the price, scientific name, enclosure and vulnerability of each animal. We could then use this data for the adopting logic and dynamically show each animal page, instead of creating dozens of individual pages for each animal.
